Twelve colleges in England have recently been chosen for AoC Sport’s new Inclusion Hubs. AoC Sport is the membership organisation for colleges, leading the development of sport and physical activity in 16+ education.

The new Hubs are intended to promote physical activity among students and ensure all those with disabilities have access to the same opportunities as their non-disabled peers.

AoC Sport expects the Hubs to engage 50 students in sport and physical activity, as well as recruit Inclusive Ambassadors and host a local development opportunity for other colleges in their region. The Hubs will form a national network to share best practice and ideas on how they have successfully engaged disabled students.

In addition, the Hubs will each receive a free Activity Alliance Inclusive Activity Programme course for their Inclusive Ambassadors and staff. Through this programme, the Activity Alliance intend to teach skills to engage disabled people with long-term health conditions more effectively in physical activity. Their own research shows that disabled people are twice as likely to be inactive compared to non-disabled people but four in five disabled people say they want to be more active.

This is positive news that demonstrates a proactive approach to engaging and encouraging disabled students in sport and physical activity. EuroCoach will aim to share any news, reports and materials published by this new network of Inclusion Hubs in the coming year.
