There are a number of interesting projects currently running in Ireland that focus on promoting gender equality in sport. One of these is the 20X20 project, an all inclusive movement to shift the cultural perception of women in sport by the end of 2020. Its goal is to ensure a 20% increase in the level of media coverage of women sport, female participation at all levels of sport and attendance at women's games and events.
The Ladies Gaelic Football Association have created an interactive 4 day female leadership programme in the strands of coaching, officiating, administration and PR/media. It is designed to provide the skills and insights needed to develop a leadership style that will allow participants to reach their full potential.
Ireland as a country has seen a continuous growth in the popularity of sport amongst women and girls in recent years. According to the Irish Sports Monitor report, 2017, the gender gradient in sports participation has narrowed from 15.7% to 4.5% since 2007.
A positive project in Northern Ireland is ‘Engage Her’. This project provides local communities with training and operational assistance to strengthen their ability to effectively engage with women and girls in the sphere of sport. Check out the video below.
